About Chronic Cough

Cough is the body’s main defence mechanism to protect the lungs from chemical, thermal and mechanical irritants. Everyone at some point in their life will suffer from a terrible cough, usually with a cold or flu-like symptoms. For most people the cough goes away once the cold goes away, but in some individuals the cough remains with no signs of leaving. For others, the cough can occur without any prior infection.

Chronic cough is defined as a cough that has lasted for more than 8 weeks. Globally, chronic cough affects around 10% of the general population and peaks later in life between the ages of 50 to 60 years. In Canada, the overall prevalence is higher at around 16%. Chronic cough can be associated with medical conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, reflux disease, and nasal disease. For many cases of chronic cough there is no identifiable cause; these cases are referred to as unexplained chronic cough. When an associated trigger or cause of the cough is identified, and the cough persists it is referred to as refractory chronic cough as it is refractory to available treatment.
